When conflict arises, try to avoid using blameful language towards your partner as this invites negativity into the situation. Try to communicate assertively and take responsibility for your own feelings and actions, and try to focus solely on the issue at hand.
Consider the following issues that arise when facing conflict with your partner:
- What does “take responsibility for your own feelings” mean to you?
- What does it feel like to recognise your feelings in any situation?
- Are you relieved to be able to express your feelings?
- Do you feel more vulnerable?
- Do you feel proud?
- How does this help emotionally charged situations?
If you and your partner ever feel overwhelmed by your results or the ensuing discussion, we encourage you to seek out professional support. Call us.
