Personality is stable throughout life, so don’t expend energy in your relationship trying to change your partner’s personality, instead put in effort to understand each other’s personality factors as well as your own.
Application: Begin acknowledging aspects of your personality, as well as your partner’s, in everyday life. For example, if one of you is high on social (extroverted) and the other low (introverted), consider this when planning weekend activities. Maybe this means you go to a friend’s dinner party on Saturday and spend Sunday at home doing house projects.
If personality is an area of your relationship you want to continue to explore, there are a variety of other assessments and theories that will give additional insight into each individual’s personality. CoupleCheckup and PREPARE/ENRICH both offer deep understanding into areas of personality and the implications of different personalities on a relationship.
Maybe spend an upcoming date night taking another personality assessment to continue learning even more about each other.
If you and your partner ever feel overwhelmed by your results or the ensuing discussion, we encourage you to seek out professional support. Call us.
