There is no sense in trying to have a discussion if you’ve already made up your mind before you have started

The development of skills can all to easily become over-shadowed by the feedback process. Aiming for a balanced approach in which feedback and the development of skills (e.g. good listening skills and constructive ways of handling conflict) are both valued is a good goal.

Moving forward only when both partners can confidently answer: Yes, we are ready to move ahead.

Here are some thoughts for couples to consider:

Check yourself

  • Are you open to change?
  • Are you comfortable practicing communication skills such as active listening and being assertive?
  • Is your mindset welcoming to honest discussion?

There is no sense in trying to have a discussion if you’ve already made up your mind about everything related to your relationship.

If you decide you are ready to move forward with reviewing your relationship and working through various issues, well done. If you decide you need to make some adjustments before discussing or delaying discussion – that’s good too!

The goal is to get talking to your partner, even if that conversation doesn’t happen right away.
